What Does A DJ Do?

One of the most exciting, but sometimes stressful, questions couples discuss during the wedding planning process is how they will bring everyone together after the “I Do’s” have been exchanged. From grandmothers to your best girlfriends, you want all of your guests to enjoy themselves and be able to celebrate alongside them. 

Cue the perfect DJ! A packed dance floor is a telltale sign of a great party and the right DJ can bring people from every age group, profession and walk of life together.

It’s important to understand the five different types of DJs so you can pick the ideal one for your special day. 

The Human Jukebox  - The most basic option, this entertainer will likely play a list of pre-planned songs (either provided by the couple or the DJ’s company) and plays nearly every request. If you have a client that needs a human jukebox, let your DJ know in advance!

    • Pro: If you want to control the majority of the songs and know exactly which songs you want played, this might be the best option.

    • Cons: This individual is often not a full-time DJ, uses sub-par equipment and probably won’t be an expert at keeping the crowd engaged.

Producer/Composer - While Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki are absolute legends in the music world and would probably DJ the shit out of your wedding, they come with a hefty price tag as they charge multi-millions per performance and book more than a year in advance. 

    • Pro: Your wedding will be on the same level as Coachella.

    • Cons: Expensive and festival sets probably won’t be enjoyed by the majority of your guest list. Grandma has probably never heard of Skrillex.

Music Genre Aficionado - This artist specializes in one particular type of music, such as deep house, underground hip-hop, obscure disco, etc. They often include unfamiliar songs in their sets and regularly play in nightclubs and bars. 

    • Pro: If you and your partner are obsessed with a certain style of music, you might really enjoy this option.

    • Cons: Not as much musical diversity which can make it hard for all attendees to connect with the music.

Crowd Pleaser - This DJs set is guaranteed to include popular music, main stream hits and chart topping tracks. 

    • Pro: Every guest will recognize these songs.

    • Cons: You have probably heard every song at least a hundred times, if not more.

Actual DJ - A rare gem, this artist knows a lot of music and is able to create a perfectly balanced soundtrack customized to each couples unique music taste. From quiet cocktails to a raging finale, this DJ knows how to elevate any event. 

    • Pro: You’ve never experienced anything quite like this set, but it will be music to your ears and make for an unforgettable night.

    • Cons: Actual DJs can be hard to find and can book up far in advance.

While you and your planner have probably spent the better part of a year making sure every detail of your dream day is flawless and perfectly executed, the guest may not even notice or appreciate the extra effort. They will, however, hear the music and not be able to resist hitting the dance floor before the beat drops.

A DJs main job is to successfully orchestrate your wedding from the first dance and dinner to dancing and the after party seamlessly. They are in charge of reading the room, getting the party started, keeping the dance floor packed and ensuring everyone says your wedding was the most fun they have ever had.
