Selecting A DJ For Our Wedding

I know how hard it is to find a good DJ, especially if you’re looking for one that spends just as much time preparing for your event as they do on their skincare routine. My fiancé and I have begun planning our dream wedding in Savannah for 2023. Let’s be real, Mandy is doing all the planning and is completely in her element.

What we’re quickly learning is the challenge couples encounter when it comes to finding the right fit for a DJ. I have been on the other end of the search thousands of times but am seeing it through a whole new lens now.

The crazy part is, I know what to look for more than 99% of people. While a good DJ should be a chameleon and be able to make changes based on the crowd, most DJs have a “style”. Pro tip: you definitely want your vibe to align with their style. As we dived deep into the search, we realized what we like and what everyone else likes is so different. Super high energy remixes, mashups and redrums are incredibly popular right now. Mandy and I both have a very particular taste in music and love hearing the original songs.

While I like the creative challenge of making remixes, I typically don’t play them at events. Most of the remixes available on the paid software platforms that DJs can download from are just two popular songs thrown together with little regard for the vocals, drum, bass or instruments. Just because a remix is on the internet is not a good reason to play it. But like everything else, people want to use the services they are paying for. I was honestly surprised how many of these remixes we heard when trying to evaluate potential DJs.

Choosing a DJ should be a very intuitive decision. If I could give any advice to couples trying to find a DJ, it would be to make sure your vibe aligns with their DJ “style”, listen to their mixes, meet them in person and see them perform if possible. You will need to trust your DJ more than any other vendor you hire so don’t rush the process.
