Why I Like DJing Rehearsal Dinners

It’s safe to say that hosting a ceremony rehearsal (and dinner after) the day before your wedding is a fairly common practice. After all, you want to ensure that everyone knows where to go, what to do and is prepared so your wedding can go off without a hitch.

The guest list for rehearsal events can be as simple as the couple getting married, their nuclear family and the bridal party or can feature extended family and other guests. I’ve noticed more and more the trend is to host larger rehearsal dinners, especially for destination weddings.

Couples often ask if I am available to DJ their ceremony rehearsal, rehearsal dinner or both. I absolutely love when this happens! The opportunity to DJ a rehearsal event is arguably one of the biggest advantages a DJ can get. It’s like peaking at the test the day before you have to take it. Up until this moment, the only wedding attendees that you have met are the couple and maybe their parents. DJing the rehearsal allows you to survey the crowd and feel out their taste and style. Key details like age, relationship to couple of guests (will it be more friends or more family) and their style hint at what the vibe might be like the next evening. This provides a unique opportunity to test out how the crowd responds to certain music, if they favor a particular genre and their overall likes and dislikes are.

While couples might only consider the entertainment factor of having a DJ present, the bonus of getting some answers before the big day is a major selling feature for me. Any time I can, I say “I Do” to DJing rehearsals. It’s a win-win for everyone!
